Camelback Mountain

Camelback Mountain gets its name from the unique silhouette it casts on the Valley skyline. Inhabited by rabbits, lizards and a variety of birds and snakes (including venomous rattlesnakes), the mountain trails can provide a myriad of animal sightings. In addition, the variety of cacti species encountered along the trails is breathtaking. Please note that the two main trails that offer the vast majority of hiking opportunities are rated Extremely Difficult; subjecting hikers to steep elevation gains, uneven terrain, and a path that is unprotected from the elements en route to the summit that sits 2,704 feet above sea level. But for those willing to make the trek, the views of the valley below are exceptional. Dogs are prohibited from all Camelback Mountain trails year-round. Parking is limited near the trailheads and parking along the surrounding roadways is not permitted. Trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Taliesin West

A UNESCO World Heritage site and National Historical Landmark, Taliesin West is Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert laboratory in Arizona. It’s nestled in the desert foothills of the McDowell Mountains and deeply connected to the desert from where it came. As one of the most personal of the artist’s creations, Wright spent winters here until he died. Many of the Legacy Fellows who lived and worked with Wright continue to live on the grounds. Initially comprised of wooden forms with cement and desert sand, some parts have been replaced over the years with fiberglass and steel to keep up with the structure’s permanence. With events and tours available to the public, there is a lot to explore at this historic architectural masterpiece.
